The DVD will be available at the national championship tournament. DVDs will be $20 at the tournament. The DVD features the Division I final game that was shot with three high definition cameras. This DVD does not include footage of the other teams at the 2007 national championship tournament.
Am I correct to understand that the cost to produce this DVD was $6536.00 as stated in John Ershek's treasurer's report? And from reading the minutes from last years AGM, a proposed budget of $3000.00 was discussed for filming at Nationals. Do we have a reason for the cost overrun and how it was covered? Also, was the filming at Nationals put out to bid?
It seems that $20 per DVD is a steep price to pay to watch one game regardless if it was filmed by three HD cameras. It's just my opinion, but it seems like the $3500 extra that was needed to produce the video could have been used elsewhere, like shot clocks or additional clinics.
Yes you correctly understand the costs associated with the DVD. We had spent $3000 to film at nationals last year. That was part of last year's marketing budget. We had not had filmed quality footage since the 2002 national championship. That $3000 was the cost of the production. Two days filming professional cameraman, three high-definition cameras, lighting, producing and travel expenses. We did not have to rent any of the equipment and our cameraman took the travel expenses out of their day rate. John E. and I helped with the producing and filming which of course was donated.
Once you have all of this footage you need to do something with it. Editing and postproduction including graphics and DVD authoring is where the extra $3500 came from. The money came from the 2007/2008 marketing budget. The filming at nationals was not put out to bid. However if you have video capabilities you are free to submit proposals to the USQRA.
If we would have hired a professional production company to do all the filming that we did last year it would cost somewhere around $20,000. I know $6,000 is a lot of money to the USQRA but that is a highly reduced cost of the footage we were able to attain and use for marketing purposes for the DVD and other projects.
