D-3 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

The D-3 National Championship is May 16-18 in SLC, UT. Teams thus far committed or in disscussion to compete are Sin City Skulls, Capitol Punishers, Indy Quad Squad, Raileigh Sidewinders, Brooks Bandits, and Utah Scorpions. This tournament is fully suported by USQRA as a sanctioned post season National Championships therefore its my commitement as host to put on the best championships possible with a state of the art multi-million dollar tournament facility, 4 star hotel lodging, excellant transpertation, exclusive media interviews, trained volunteers, good food, and a state of the art challenge championship trophy to take home to your sponsors..
As your host my highest priority is to accomadate the needs of the tournament so players focus can be on the game nothing else.
Please understand their is still one open spot availiable for any young team interested at winning D-3 National Championships in May. Contact Tim Daynes at 801-864-3644 asap. Your team must be 5 years or younger, not made d-1/d-2 nationals in the past 3 seasons, and have no international player on rostor.

We need answers.....

I've been following today's emails concerning what at one point was the "D3 National Championship" tournament in Salt Lake City. For those of you who do not yet know, the tournament is now (as of this post) simply being listed on the rugby calendar as "USQRA Developmental Tournament".

It is also important to note that in the subject line listing the type of eligible teams
originally stated "top 8 Divison 3 teams". This line now says "8 Non DI/DII teams".

I am DEEPLY concerned with the current confusion and the "information which has been disseminated concerning this tournament" which is "not necessarily correct".

This tournament is a little over a month away. Many people have already made arrangements concerning travel and play in this tournament based on the information which has been emailed and posted on this web site up until the past 72 hours. It now appears that the entire nature of the tournament has changed.

When can we expect the "reevaluation of this tournament" to be completed? Who is officially invited? Is this tournament going to be played as a D3 National Championship tournament or just another postseason event? Why is all of this just now being discussed with only a few weeks left to go before play is scheduled to begin?

This isn't just rugby we're talking about here - this is time off from work, team expense, personal expense, and the schedules of many players, coaches, volunteers, and support staff.

What's the deal?

Answers are definitely needed!

Hi Justin and all other interested parties,

I speak for the Utah Scorpions when I say that we are also deeply concerned by this turn of events. We have been nothing but honest with everyone we have spoken to about the D-League National Championships. The fact that it was posted as such on the USQRA Calendar proves that we had the support of the Board. It is only recently that they have started making this changes.

They are attempting to change things after we have spent thousands of dollars and hours to put this tournament together. It is far too late in the process for this. They have allowed political nonsense and personal bias to cloud their judgment on what is best for the USQRA.

We have committed ourselves to putting on the greatest tournament imaginable, and we intend to continue in this task. Every team that attends our tournament will find nothing but the best of accommodations and will be glad they chose to accept the invitation. We too would like to know "What's the deal?". The teams involved, as well as tournament hosts, sponsors, and volunteers deserve better treatment than what we have been receiving from the USQRA Board lately.

Thank you for sharing your concerns with us, we will continue to fight this tooth and nail.

-Bobby Stewart
-Utah Scorpions

PS. We have email evidences of official invites, lists of teams wanted to participate, and of the support of this tournament as a National Championship by Commissioner Tom Hamill.

I think it's one of those carts before the horses thing!

First of all I like the idea of a DIII Championship. The Top 24 would be settled on the hardwood each year, as it should be.

I'm interested in seeing how the proposals that restructure the USQRA do at the AGM because I believe the interest that has been generated for a DIII Championship should have an impact on how they look.

The problem I think the Board has come up against is that the ByLaws do not speak to a DIII Championship. It was always my understanding that it was going to be the 4th and 5th place teams from each Sectional to decide positions 17 thru 24, a continuation of how DI & DII are decided. There lies the problem, the ByLaws have fines for withdrawing from post season play in DI & DII. It wouldn't be fair to fine teams for not attending a post season tournament that the USQRA is silent on at the begininng of the season.

Some of the 4th & 5th place teams may not have budgeted resources to attend another tournament. Then what do you do? It's been advertised as the next best 8 teams to fight it out for the 17 thru 24 position, but the next best 8 teams might not be there. How can you call it a DIII Championship if it's not the next best 8 teams?

It sounds like they are trying to shift gears and make it a best of the rest. It's a tough decision but that's why they make the big bucks...kidding!

Clarification

*My above post, my current post, and any future posts in this thread are being stated as a result of my own confusion and personal opinions and do not represent the thoughts/opinions of any other teammate, team manager, coaches, or support staff.

Also, I am beginning to see why there was confusion. Some of it appears to be the result of honest mistakes and some appears to be the result of wishful thinking.

Best of luck to you all as you continue to sort this out...
